Lepra ist heilbar – Stigmatisierung als zentrale Hürde auf dem Weg zu Zero Leprosy

Abstract

Das Motto des Welt-Lepra-Tags „Leprosy is curable, the real challenge is stigma“ zeigt auf, dass Lepra heute weniger eine medizinische als vielmehr eine gesellschaftliche Herausforderung darstellt. Wirksame diagnostische und therapeutische Instrumente stehen zur Verfügung. Dennoch werden jährlich mehr als 170.000 Neuerkrankungen registriert, von denen ein relevanter Anteil mit fortgeschrittenen Behinderungen einhergeht. Dies macht deutlich, dass die anhaltende Lepra-Verbreitung nicht primär auf biologische Erregereigenschaften zurückzuführen ist, sondern maßgeblich durch soziale Determinanten wie Stigmatisierung, Diskriminierung und eingeschränkten Zugang zu Gesundheitsdiensten bedingt ist.

The theme of World Leprosy Day, “Leprosy is curable, the real challenge is stigma,” highlights the fact that leprosy is less of a medical challenge than a social one. As reported in Epidemiologisches Bulletin 3/2026, effective diagnostic and therapeutic tools are available. Nevertheless, more than 170,000 new cases are registered each year, a significant proportion of which are associated with advanced disabilities. This makes it clear that the continued spread of leprosy is not primarily due to biological pathogen characteristics, but is largely caused by social determinants such as stigma, discrimination, and limited access to health services.
