| ger |
| dc.description.abstract | RKI guideline to malaria Malaria is one of the major parasitic infectious diseases worldwide. Despite considerable progress in prevention and control, malaria continues to cause a substantial burden of disease: according to estimates by the WHO, approximately 282 million people worldwide contracted malaria in 2024, and around 610,000 died. In Germany, malaria occurs predominantly as an imported infectious disease. Between 2023 and 2025, approximately 900–1,000 malaria cases were reported annually under the mandatory notification requirements of the IfSG, with a total of 12 deaths recorded during this period. Since 2023 10 cases of malaria contracted in Germany have been recorded. It is therefore essential to consider malaria in the differential diagnosis of any febrile illness following a stay in an area with malaria transmission and to initiate appropriate testing without delay. Under certain circumstances, malaria should also be considered in the differential diagnosis even in the absence of a relevant travel history. | eng |
