PrEP in Germany – Survey of the German association of physicians in HIV care (dagnä e. V.) in specialised HIV care
Infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) can be prevented through pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). A retrospective survey of 29 specialised HIV centres within the dagnä network across ten federal states revealed that, in 2025, a total of 130,452 people were treated at these centres, including 28,537 people living with HIV and 19,264 PrEP users. A total of 300 new HIV diagnoses were recorded; 17 of these (5.7% of all reported first-time HIV diagnoses) occurred after PrEP had been initiated. HIV infection whilst using PrEP remains a very rare occurrence. Long-acting PrEP was considered to have particular potential to reduce stigma associated with HIV, improve adherence, facilitate access for vulnerable groups and increase acceptance among PrEP users. The importance of long-acting PrEP was rated positively for almost all target groups surveyed. At the same time, relevant barriers to prescribing long-acting PrEP were identified.
