In 2011, Salmonella Strathcona was first identified in connection with a multinational outbreak in Europe. Since then, outbreaks involving S. Strathcona have been observed repeatedly across Europe, with their scale increasing over the years. Between 2011 and 2024, over 600 outbreak cases were identified in 17 European countries. An analysis of data from several European countries for the years 2011 to 2024 showed that the vast majority of sequenced isolates were genetically closely related across years and countries; this pattern is consistent with a common source. The S. Strathcona outbreak in the 2025/2026 season comprised a total of 116 outbreak cases in Germany (100 confirmed, 16 probable cases). The report describes the S. Strathcona outbreak in Germany using an epicurve, the spatial distribution within Germany, monthly case numbers, the results of genome sequencing of the isolates and interviews with affected individuals.
