Amendment to the recommendation “Hand hygiene in healthcare settings” regarding the temperature of the water at medical hand-washing stations The most important single measure of hand hygiene in medical and nursing care is hand disinfection. Certain specific indications also require hand washing. According to the World Health Organization, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and several studies, the effects of water temperature on the effective removal of pathogens from the hands are negligible. The effectiveness of handwashing on transient flora correlates, for example, with the duration of handwashing, the technique used, the quality of the water used and the handwashing products. On the basis of this evidence, KRINKO is amending its recommendation on “Hand hygiene in healthcare settings” and recommends that a medical hand-washing station be equipped with a cold-water supply of drinking-water quality; warm water is not required. The potential effects of water temperature on adherence to handwashing, microbiological efficacy, skin health, the environmental footprint and microbial effects are discussed.
